According to The Hollywood Reporter, Shia LaBeouf has signed on to play tennis legend John McEnroe in the upcoming biopic Borg/McEnroe, which will chronicle “the long-running battle for supremacy in the tennis world in the 1970s and 1980s between McEnroe and Swedish star Bjorn Borg.”
LaBeouf will star alongside Swedish actor Sverrir Gudnason (A Serious Game) as Borg, while Stellan Skarsgard is set to play Borg’s coach Lennart Bergelin. The film is being directed by Danish filmmaker Janus Metz, who helmed the Cannes Grand Prize-winning war documentary Armadillo, from a script by Ronnie Sandahl (Underdog)
“This is a very powerful drama that plunges deep into the minds of two extremely interesting personalities living in an explosive era. I am very honored and excited to be at the reigns of it”, states Metz.
Production on Borg/McEnroe is set to get underway in the fall ahead of a release next year.
