Showrunner Eric Kripke explains why The Boys season 2 is being released weekly

September 14, 2020 by Amie Cranswick

Amazon shook up its distribution model for the second season of its acclaimed comic book adaptation The Boys, with fans only getting the first three episodes in one go before things shifted to a weekly release pattern form the remaining five.

As such, we’re only halfway through the season so far, and it’s a decision that hasn’t went down too well. Many fans have taken to social media to slam Amazon, and some fans have even felt it necessary to vent their frustration at having to wait for new episodes by review bombing the show. However, as showrunner Eric Kripke has now confirmed, the decision to go to a weekly release pattern was made by the writers, and not the powers that be at Amazon:

“The airing schedule came actually when we were pretty close to being done – probably 3/4 of the way through post-production,” said Kripke in an interview with Collider. “For the record, it didn’t come from Amazon. It came from the producers… we’re the ones who pitched them. A lot of people over there were actually reluctant because it was a new idea or they don’t do it that often. We really wanted it and Amazon ended up agreeing that they’d give it a try.”

“Our feeling is that when it airs all eight at once, it becomes a sugar rush of a binge,” he explained. “People burn through it in a week or two. There’s an intense amount of activity and then it sort of fades. There’s so many great moments in season 2, we want to give it time to marinate so people can reflect on it and talk about it before they move on to the next thing and be in the conversation a little longer. I think a little anticipation for the fans is healthy.”
