Dexter fans were left with plenty of questions last week when it was reported that Showtime would be killing off Dexter: New Blood, but was considering several potential spinoffs that could keep the Dexter franchise alive as the cable network prepares to merge with the Paramount+ streaming service.
Well, we now have some clarity on the situation thanks to The Wall Street Journal, which has confirmed with Showtime that a foll0w-up to Dexter: New Blood is indeed still in the works, and should it receive the green light, it would “focus on Dexter’s son, Harrison (Jack Alcott), who survived his tumultuous reintroduction with his father and flees to New York City where he must wrestle with his own violent nature and whether, like his father, he too is compelled to kill.”
In addition to the potential New Blood sequel series, Showtime has also granted a series order to Dexter: Origins, a prequel following a young Dexter at the outset of his transition into the avenging serial killer he would become, as he graduates college and joins Miami Metro.
As well as a younger incarnation of Michael C. Hall’s Dexter Morgan, Origins will also feature adopted father Harry and a teenage Deb, played by James Remar and Jennifer Carpenter in the original series, as well as young versions of other familiar characters from the original series.
That’s not all either, as Variety reports that Showtime is also considering a number of additional spinoffs, including a prequel series which would revolve around the Trinity Killer, played by John Lithgow in a fan-favourite role in the original show.
“The Dexter saga has been an undeniable creative and popular success for Showtime, both in its original, groundbreaking form and the record-setting Dexter: New Blood,” said Chris McCarthy, president and CEO of Showtime and Paramount Media Networks. “The series is a rich foundation for other shows in the lane of complex, subversive antiheroes that Showtime has always done so brilliantly. [Showrunner Clyde Phillips] is deep into compelling stories and characters that will satisfy the cravings of our multifaceted audience.”
