David Lynch and Mark Frost’s cult show Twin Peaks returned to the small screen last year for a new limited series set 25 years after the 90s TV phenomenon, and while Lynch has said that he’d “never say never” to more episodes, as yet there’s been no official word as to whether we can expect another season.
However, it seems the ball is firmly in Lynch and Frost’s court, as Showtime head of programming Gary Levine has revealed at the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour that the network’s door “is always open” to more Twin Peaks.
“The door at Showtime is always open to Mark and David for more Twin Peaks or anything else they want to talk about,” said Levine. “But let’s remember it took 25 years for Mark and David to go from 1.0 to 2.0. Add to that what David did in the last few years was nothing short of Herculean. To direct 18 consecutive hours of television belongs in the Guiness Book of World Records. And wrote, and starred, and edited, and composed. It’s a Herculean task and he did it just so beautifully.”
Despite critical acclaim, Twin Peaks: The Return struggled in the ratings, with an average audience of 2 million viewers. However, ratings are of little concern to Showtime given that advertising is not part of its business model, and the show did prove very successful at driving subscriptions, setting new records for sign-ups with Showtime’s biggest ever single day and weekend.
