Black Label Media, the team behind Sicario and Sicario: Day of the Soldado, have revealed that a Benicio Del Toro-headlined Sicario 3 is “very close”.
The producing team, that is made up of sisters Molly and Rachel Smith and twin brothers Trent and Thad Luckinbill, were doing the press rounds for their Netflix thriller Reptile when talk turned to Sicario and their go-to leading man Benicio Del Toro.
During a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Molly Smith said of the potential continuation of the world created in Denis Villeneuve’s Sicario, and expanded upon in Stefano Sollima’s underrated sequel, “We’re very close. It’s one of the projects where we’re ready to put the train on the tracks as soon as the strike ends and our path is cleared. So we’re very excited to get that whole band back together,” she continued, “Taylor always envisioned it as a trilogy, so we have to close it out right. There’s no point in making it unless we can do justice to the true fans of Sicario.”
Written by Yellowstone‘s Taylor Sheridan, 2015’s Sicario starred Emily Blunt as a rookie FBI agent who is enlisted by a government task force to bring down the leader of a powerful and brutal Mexican drug cartel with the help of Benicio Del Toro’s mysterious Alejandro Gillick. The film drew universal praise and earned Academy Award and BAFTA nominations.
The 2018 sequel focused on Del Toro’s character and the ongoing drug war on the U.S.-Mexico border, and while it didn’t garner the accolades of its predecessor, it was still considered a box-office success ($75 million WW).
