Simu Liu had a strong introduction to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with his debut film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. But a sequel to that film is starting to feel less and less likely as time passes.
The actor finally gave an update, noting the film has been pushed back due to outside circumstances. In a recent post on Threads, Liu broke the news to his fans, confirming that Shang Chi 2 has been delayed for the near future. He notes, “Was told it would follow Avengers, but that keeps pushing back due to circumstances beyond my control. Liu adds, “Hope to have more concrete news to share soon.”
It seems like Marvel Studios has other plans for the character and the MCU overall. Shang Chi is still expected to play a role in the larger story even if he doesn’t have a solo film in the works. Could Shang Chi formally join the Avengers before even having a sequel to his first film? In this new Marvel landscape, anything seems possible.
Marvel Studios recently moved their film slate around, with most of the Phase Five and Phase Six release dates delayed. Avengers: The Kang Dynasty will be released on May 1, 2026, while Avengers: Secret Wars will now be released on May 7, 2027. By that logic, it wouldn’t be till sometime in 2028 that we could see Shang Chi 2.
