Solo: A Star Wars Story writer isn’t confident that a sequel will happen anytime soon

September 18, 2018 by Samuel Brace

Jonathan Kasdan, the co-writer for Solo: A Star Wars Story, doesn’t think that a sequel will be made to the film anytime soon.

There’s no question that the box office performance for Solo: A Star Wars Story, especially overseas, was disappointing, and has in all likelihood put to bed the hopes for a sequel to the film.

The story was left somewhat open-ended, however, and the many fans that enjoyed the movie have expressed interest in seeing these threads continued. But it seems co-writer Jonathan Kasdan is in agreement that this will be unlikely, at least in the near future.

Taking to Twitter, Kasdan said: “Will there ever be a sequel ’cause it really seems like you guys were setting one up? To be honest, I think the challenge has more to do with the foreign box office than the U.S. Personally, I think there are great Star Wars movies to be made that don’t need to cost quite so much. Hopefully that will be the trend in years to come, and maybe, just maybe, that trend will allow us, one way or another, to tell more stories with Alden Ehrenreich, Joonas Suotamo, Emilia Clarke, and Donald Glover.”

It certainly seems true that Star Wars movies don’t need to cost the world to make and that smaller films could indeed be made, but it appears in the aftermath of Solo, Lucasfilm will be producing infrequent big budget movies rather than smaller films on a frequent basis.

However, with all of the books, comics, animated shows, and live-action series set in the Star Wars world, it seems likely that we haven’t seen the last of a young Han and Lando.

A new adventure with the most beloved scoundrel in the galaxy. Through a series of daring escapades deep within a dark and dangerous criminal underworld, Han Solo meets his mighty future copilot Chewbacca and encounters the notorious gambler Lando Calrissian, in a journey that will set the course of one of the Star Wars saga’s most unlikely heroes.

Solo: A Star Wars Story features Alden Ehrenreich (Hail, Caesar!) as the famous smuggler, Donald Glover (Atlanta) as Lando Calrissian, Woody Harrelson (War for the Planet of the Apes) as Tobias Beckett, Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca, Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag) as L3-37, Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) as Qi’Ra, Thandie Newton (Westworld) as Val, Ian Kenny (Sing Street) as Rebolt, Harley Durst (Wonder Woman) as Moloch, Jon Favreau (Spider-Man: Homecoming) as Rio Durant, Paul Bettany (Avengers: Infinity War) as Dryden Vos and Warwick Davis (Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi) as Weazel.
