Christmas will come a little early for Sonic fans as Paramount has given Sonic The Hedgehog 3 a holiday release date. The third film in the franchise is set to be released on December 20th, 2024, right up against James Cameron’s Avatar 3.
Based on the hit video game franchise, Sonic sped his way to the big screen in 2020 from director Jeff Fowler and starred Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic with James Marsden as Tom Wachowski, a small-town police officer and Sonic’s friend, Tika Sumpter as Tom’s wife Maddie and Jim Carrey as Sonic’s archnemesis Dr. Robotnik.
Sonic The Hedgehog was a box office hit, earning $319.7 million worldwide. Earlier this year Sonic The Hedgehog 2 was released and outperformed the original with $402.2 million, becoming the highest grossing video game adaptation in the US and fourth highest grossing adaptation worldwide. Alongside Schwartz, Marsden, Sumpter and Carrey, the film introduced Sonic’s trusty friend Tails voiced by the game’s Colleen O’Shaughnessey and Sonic’s new adversary Knuckles, voiced by Idris Elba.

It is currently unknown if Fowler will return to direct Sonic The Hedgehog 3 and Carrey recently announced he’s considering retirement from acting. In the event he does, the producers have said they will not recast him as Robotnik for the film. A Knuckles spin-off TV series for Paramount+ is also being developed with Elba returning to voice the role.
