Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios are reportedly in talks with Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton to helm the next installment in the Spider-Man franchise.
Having exited Avengers: The Kang Dynasty when that timeline collapsed, Marvel has been keen to keep Cretton in the MCU family, tasking him with steering Disney+ series Wonder Man to small-screen, and now they are in early talks for him to take the reins from Jon Watts for Spider-Man 4.
According to Deadline, Sony and Marvel are starting to spin-their-web on the next film in the series, with deals for both Tom Holland and Zendaya in the works. So having secured an overall deal with Marvel Studios following Shang-Chi‘s impressive pandemic-era haul of $432 million at the worldwide box-office, Cretton appears to be top of their list to continue the franchise.
Where this leaves Shang-Chi 2 is anybody’s guess. The sequel appears to have been lost in Marvel’s post-Kang reshuffle, and with Cretton already set to write and direct a live-action Naruto movie for Lionsgate, it could be a while before get to see the Simu Liu-led sequel.
