When you think of movies likely to cause a controversy this year, Peter Rabbit probably wasn’t very high on the list. However, the live-action/CG hybrid adaptation of Beatrix Potter’s classic character has done just that, with the film coming in for criticism due to a scene making light of food allergies.
During one part of the film, Peter and his bunny friends shower the character of Mr. McGregor (Domhnall Gleeson) with blackberries. He is allergic to the fruit, and is forced to use an EpiPen to prevent a reaction when he begins choking on one of the berries. The scene has drawn criticism from parents and food allergy charities, evening leading to a Twitter campaign to boycott the film with the hashtag #boycottpeterrabbit.
In response to the criticism, Sony Pictures has released an apology, which reads:
“Food allergies are a serious issue. Our film should not have made light of Peter Rabbit’s arch nemesis, Mr. McGregor, being allergic to blackberries, even in a cartoonish, slapstick way. We sincerely regret not being more aware and sensitive to this issue, and we truly apologize.”

Peter Rabbit, the mischievous and adventurous hero who has captivated generations of readers, now takes on the starring role of his own irreverent, contemporary comedy with attitude. In the film, Peter’s feud with Mr. McGregor (Domhnall Gleeson) escalates to greater heights than ever before as they rival for the affections of the warm-hearted animal lover who lives next door (Rose Byrne). James Corden voices the character of Peter with playful spirit and wild charm, with Margot Robbie, Elizabeth Debicki, and Daisy Ridley performing the voice roles of the triplets, Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cottontail.
Peter Rabbit is out now in the States and opens on March 16th in the UK.
