Sony Pictures has set an October 8th 2021 release date for an as-yet-unrevealed Spider-Man spinoff movie as part of its Universe of Marvel Characters.
Having launched the ‘SUMC’ with 2018’s Venom, Sony is fleshing out its Spider-Verse with two movies this year in the Jared Leto-headlined Morbius (July) and Venom 2 (October), and has several others in development including solo films for Kraven the Hunter, Nightwatch, Silk, Madame Web, Jackpot, Silver Sable and Black Cat.
All of those are potential candidates for the October 2021 slot, while unconfirmed rumours are circulating suggesting that Sony is also working on a Spider-Woman movie focusing on the character of Jessica Drew (the rights to whom, in a situation similar to Quicksilver, is believed to be shared between both Sony and Marvel).
While we’ll have to wait for confirmation on the Sony movie, what this does mean is that we’ve got FIVE Marvel films to look forward to on the big screen in 2021, with the Sony and Marvel-produced Spider-Man 3 joined by Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Thor: Love and Thunder.
