Sony is really getting to work on their Spider-Man spin-offs. Just a few days ago they cast Tom Hardy and hired director Ruben Fleischer for Venom and now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, they’re fully moving forward on Silver & Black, the spin-off film featuring Spidey villains/anti-heroes Silver Sable and Black Cat. Sony has hired The Secret Life of Bees director Gina Prince-Bythewood to helm the spin-off.
The film will be separate from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming. Much like Venom, it will exist within its own universe, although as yet there’s been no official word as to whether the two spinoff movies will connect with each other.
Silver Sable is a mercenary who has been an ally and antagonist to Spider-Man. Her primary goal is to hunt down war criminals and bring them in by any means necessary. Black Cat is, of course, a cat burglar with a complicated, sometimes romantic, relationship with Spidey. The character was set to appear in Sam Raimi’s cancelled Spider-Man 4 (rumoured to have been portrayed by Anne Hathaway who, funny enough, would portray the Batman cat-burglar Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises) and had a small role in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 where she was portrayed by Felicity Jones, though no hint to the Black Cat identity was ever made.
Amy Pascal and Matt Tolmach are producing Silver & Black from a script by Chris Yost (Thor: Ragnarok), who is rewriting a draft from Lisa Joy (Westworld).
