Sony officially announces sequel to The Equalizer

April 23, 2015 by Gavin Logan

Based on the classic 80’s TV show of the same name, The Equalizer big screen remake hit theatres back in September 2014 and grossed approximately $192 million at the box office. Now Sony has officially announced a sequel is in the works.

It’s expected that Denzel Washington – who plays main tough guy Robert McCall – will reprise his role although it’s unknown whether director Antoine Fuqua will return. Fuqua and Washington will next work with each other on the remake of the 1960 classic western The Magnificent Seven which also stars Chris Pratt (Jurassic World) Ethan Hawke (Boyhood) and Vincent D’Onofrio (Daredevil) and has a tentative release for January 2017.

The first movie surprisingly did a lot better than Sony had thought it would and received mostly positive reviews. Rumblings of a possible sequel began to emerge even before the film’s official release so it’s no surprise Sony have decided to cash in.

The original TV show starring Edward Woodward first aired in 1985 and ran for a total of four complete seasons. This one may have ‘franchise’ written all over it.
