Sony wanted Antoine Fuqua to direct its Morbius, the Living Vampire Spider-Man spinoff

April 28, 2018 by Gary Collinson

As part of its planned Spider-Man spinoff universe, Sony Pictures announced last year that the upcoming Venom and in development Silver & Black and Nightwatch would be joined by a Morbius, the Living Vampire movie, and it seems the studio has been sounding out potential directors.

During an interview with Joblo, Training Day and The Equalizer Antoine Fuqua has revealed that he had talks with Sony about the Morbius movie, as well as stating that he does have ambitions to direct a superhero movie and may look to do so once he finishes up his next project, the Scarface remake.

“As a kid I grew up with comic books. They talked to me about Black Panther years ago, way back in the day. There’s some reason they came up and they talked to me about at Sony, a Marvel character, Morbius [The Living Vampire]… that kinda came up. I don’t know, I have a thirteen-year-old son so I’m watching more of that again and it’s exciting to do that. I’d love to create a new one. Y’know, something that’s closer to what I get excited about… Maybe I’ll get a chance to get lucky to do both. I’ll do Scarface and a superhero movie.”

Created by Roy Thomas and Gil Kane, Morbius made his Marvel debut in Amazing Spider-Man #101 in 1971 and is the alter-ego of Dr. Michael Morbius, a scientist who becomes inflicted with a form of vampirism after attempting to cure himself of a rare blood disease.

Next up from Fuqua is the action sequel The Equalizer 2, which is set for release on July 20th 2018.
