Sony’s Masters of the Universe film could go straight to Netflix

October 10, 2019 by Liam Waddington

Sony’s upcoming Masters of the Universe movie could be going directly to Netflix.

In a recent report by The Hollywood Reporter, the site claims that studio chairman Tom Rothman is currently exploring the prospect of making Masters of the Universe exclusively for Netflix, giving Sony a risk-free cash option rather than a pricey project with a theatrical release.

The report states, “a studio source says talks are preliminary, but such a deal would make Sony the next studio after Paramount to start making movies belonging exclusively or almost exclusively to the streamer.”

Netflix currently has the ongoing series She-Ra and The Princesses of Power and an upcoming He-Man anime series by Kevin Smith, meaning this could be a great home for the Sony film.

Based upon the classic 80s toy line and cartoon series, Masters of the Universe is set to be directed by Aaron and Adam Nee (Band of Robbers) from a script by Art Marcum and Matt Holloway (Iron Man). The movie will see Noah Centineo (To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before) take on the role of Adam, prince of Eternia and alter-ego of He-Man, who is granted the power to become the most powerful man in the universe to protect the world from Skeletor.

Do you think it’s a good idea for Sony to make the film exclusively for Netflix? Are you looking forward to a Masters of the Universe film? Let us know in the comments below or tweet us @flickeringmyth…
