Sony’s Spider-Verse gets Miles Morales-focussed horror short film

June 13, 2023 by EJ Moreno

We now know more about the upcoming spin-off short film set within the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse world.

Titled The Spider Within, the horror-centered short follows Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) as he starts to feel the pressure of his life as Spider-Man. This results in a trip through his subconscious.

The short recently premiered Annecy International Animated Film Festival and Market in France. Director Jarelle Dampier recently spoke to TheWrap about the project, detailing how personal the story feels.

“I think a lot of people who are fans of Miles, if I tell them my short’s about Miles being anxious, having a panic attack, most people who have been around a while, well, that seems like something that would happen to Miles. He just seems like that kind of kid. But we’ve never been able to have that slice-of-life moment because the movies are so big and excellent and breathtaking.

He adds, “I think horror is just one of those great down-on-the-street-level genres that you can use to just get intimate and find out what really makes this character tick, what makes them scared, and what are they going to do to get through it. I love that.”

When asked if he knew when the public could see The Spider Within, Dampier says, “I don’t know yet, officially. I don’t know, really.”

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is proving to be a massive hit for Sony Animation, already outgrossing the entire run of the first entry within two weeks. The films, the upcoming shorts, and video games make it a great time to be a Spider-Man fan.

Miles Morales returns for the next chapter of the Oscar®-winning Spider-Verse saga, Spider-Man™: Across the Spider-Verse. After reuniting with Gwen Stacy, Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is catapulted across the Multiverse, where he encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence. But when the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders and must redefine what it means to be a hero so he can save the people he loves most.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse hails from directors Joaquim Dos Santos, Justin K. Thompson, and Kemp Powers and features a voice cast that includes Shameik Moore as Miles Morales, Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacy, Jake Johnson as Peter. B Parker, Oscar Issac as Spider-Man 2099, Issa Rae as Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman, Daniel Kaluuya as Spider-Punk, Karan Soni as Spider-Man India, and Jason Schwartzman as The Spot.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is now playing.
