Sony greenlit a solo Venom movie, to spin off of their Amazing Spider-Man franchise, in conjunction with their announcement of a villain-centric film starring Spider-Man foes The Sinister Six. However, while Sinister Six has been quickly gaining traction and even has a November 11, 2016 release date, the Venom film has been more of a gamble.
While reporting that Sony has greenlit a female-led superhero film for 2017, Deadline also stated that the Venom movie, supposedly called Venom Carnage, will also arrive in 2017. Alex Kurtzman is still expected to direct the film, and is developing it with Now You See Me and Men in Black screenwriter Ed Solomon.
No other details were given in the report, so take this news with a grain of salt. It would certainly make sense for Sony to slate Venom Carnage (which I hope is not the official title.. why does Hollywood hate colons?) for 2017, since it would allow them to introduce the character in The Sinister Six, but with Kurtzman currently busy over at Universal developing their monster-centric cinematic universe and directing The Mummy reboot, will he have the time to devote to Venom Carnage? Only time will tell.
Seriously though, Sony. Change the title of this movie ASAP.
