Spider-Man is proving box office gold, with yet another Spidey movie nabbing big bucks.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is the number one movie at the domestic box office, bringing in a stellar $120.5 million for its first weekend.
With an opening like that, the film is the second-biggest opening weekend of the year, only behind the whopping $146 million brought in by The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Both animated films found a way to hit different demographics while appeasing fans. Both saw impressive CinemaScores while landing stellar reviews and positive audience responses.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse also has the third-biggest opening weekend for any Spider-Man film. The only films ahead of it are 2007’s Spider-Man 3 and 2021’s fan-favorite epic Spider-Man: No Way Home. As for its predecessor, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, the film cleared the 2018 Oscar-winner’s $35.5 million. Across the Spider-Verse had an international haul of $88.1 million, led by China with $17.3 million, bringing its worldwide opening total to $208.6 million.

The film held up well against Disney’s The Little Mermaid remake – itself only dropping 57% to a 40.6 million second weekend in second place. The third spot at the box office went to Disney and 20th Century’s The Boogeyman, seeing a $12.3 million opener against its $35 million budget.
2018’s Into the Spider-Verse brought in a total global haul of $384 million, so it is only a matter of time before this buzzy beloved sequel surpasses it. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse does face competition in the coming weeks, with Transformers: Rise of the Beasts and The Flash coming in the next few weeks.
