Transformers: Rise of the Beasts won a hard fought battle with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse over the weekend, outperforming expectations with a $60.5 million opening.
Paramount/Skydance/Hasbro’s relaunch of the robots in disguise landed with $170.5 million worldwide, with an impressive $40 million of that coming from China.
While it was a positional victory for Rise of the Beasts, the real success story can be found in the sophomore frame of Across the Spider-Verse, whose web held strong for a second week total of $55.4 million (-54%). This takes its North American cume to $225.5 million, already surpassing the lifetime domestic total of the Oscar-winning original ($190 million) after just 10 days in cinemas. Its worldwide gross currently stands at $313 million.
Elsewhere in the charts Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 continued to defy the MCU fatigue theories, taking another $7 million over the three days, and in doing so lifted trilogy-capper to a franchise best $805 million worldwide.
It wasn’t just good news for blockbuster movies either, because A24’s critically adored Past Lives (read our ★★★★★ review here) delivered one of the best speciality performances of the year, out-grossing the per-theatre average of both Transformers and Spider-Man with a second weekend take of $520K from just 26 theatres.
