“So there’s been so much pressure, so much demand and so much love for a second season. So I almost feel like you leave us no choice! But I will say there will indeed be a second season. It’s in my head right now. I’m in the planning process currently. But I do think it’s too early to say when and how that’s going to happen. So I will promise you this…,” Hwang Dong-hyuk said in his native Korean. He continues in English: “Gi-hun will come back, and he’ll do something for the world.”
Squid Game has been immensely successful for Netflix with Bloomberg previously reporting that the first season alone has grossed almost a billion for the streaming service with over 130 million watchers. It is currently Netflix’s most-watched series to date, reaching the top-viewed program in 94 countries and surpassing 2020’s Bridgerton.
The series revolves around a contest where 456 players, all of whom are in deep financial debt, participate in a series of traditional Korean children’s games such as Red Light, Green Light in order to win 45.6 billion won, however, the consequence for losing the games is death. The first season also stars Park Hae-soo as Sang-woo, Jung Ho-yeon as Sae-byeok, O Yeong-su as Il-nam, Heo Sung-tae as Deok-su, Anupam Tripathi as Ali, Kim Joo-ryoung as Mi-nyeo, and Wi Ha-joon as Hwang Jun-ho.
