The third outing for the rebooted Star Trek franchise couldn’t quite match up to Jason Bourne’s debut, and its drop off could spell trouble.
Although the film took second place in the weekend box office war, Star Trek Beyond dropped 59.9% to earn $24 million domestically – the biggest drop-off of the rebooted franchise so far. Its domestic total now sits at $105 million. Both Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness had hit $146 million by its second week, which could show there is declining interest in the series.
The film has opened in many of its international territories – but not China – and has a worldwide total of $160 million. Star Trek earned $385 million back in 2009, and Star Trek Into Darkness ended on $467 million.
Star Trek 4 has already been announced, but the decline in box office could mean the production won’t be given $180 million this time around.

Star Trek Beyond is set for release on July 22nd and features returning cast members Chris Pine as James Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Simon Pegg as Scotty, Zoë Saldana as Uhura, Karl Urban as Bones, John Cho as Sulu and Anton Yelchin as Chekov alongside new additions Idris Elba (Luther), Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service), Joe Taslim (The Raid), Lydia Wilson (About Time) and Shohreh Aghdashloo (House of Sand and Fog).
