Star Trek: Discovery’s Sonequa Martin-Green joins LeBron James in Space Jam sequel

April 6, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Having officially received the official green light back in February, the long-gestating Space Jam sequel is now moving onto the casting stage, with Variety reporting that Star Trek: Discovery and The Walking Dead’s Sonequa Martin-Green is in talks to portray the wife of producer and star LeBron James.

Terence Nance (Random Acts of Flyness) is attached to direct Space Jam 2, with Ryan Coogler (Black Panther) producing. Specific plot details are being kept under wraps, but we can assume it will follow a similar path to the first movie, albeit with NBA superstar LeBron James teaming up with the Looney Tunes characters as opposed to Michael Jordan.

Meanwhile, EPSN’s Brian Windhorst (via Dark Horizons) is reporting that James has been finding it difficult to secure cameos from his fellow NBA stars and “hasn’t been able to close some of those deals”, reportedly due to the rates of pay on offer – even though the fees are said to be on the high end for cameo appearances.

Assuming the film can entice some NBA stars, filming on Space Jam 2 is set to get underway this summer ahead of a July 16th 2021 release.
