As Lucasfilm and Disney continue to grow the Star Wars franchise on Disney+, one series that has been noticeably absent from most discussions with the powers that be is Lando from writer and showrunner Justin Simien (The Haunted Mansion) with Donald Glover reprising his Solo: A Star Wars Story role as the charismatic scoundrel.
Lando was announced in 2020 during Disney’s investors call, but since then very little has been said about it as the studios have focused more on expanding The Mandalorian and the series connected to it, such as The Book of Boba Fett and next month’s Ahsoka along with future projects including the Mandalorian crossover film Dave Filoni will direct in 2025. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy gave a brief update at this year’s Star Wars Celebration, only saying it was still in active development and they are “very excited about it.”
In an interview with The Direct, Simien was asked if there has been any further discussions since then and said he had “not received an update since that update.” He continued by telling the outlet “I certainly poured my heart and spent a lot of time working with them to put together a really great show. It feels like everybody loves it. And, you know, I was told we had to put a pause on it because of scheduling, and the next update I got [was in 2020], some years ago. So I don’t know, I have no idea what’s going on with it.”
Hopefully we’ll hear further news on Lando soon, but it may be a while as Donald Glover’s schedule is usually very busy and he is due to film the long-awaited Community movie. There is also the fact Hollywood’s writers and now actors are on strike that doesn’t look to end anytime soon, putting many productions, including the fourth season of The Mandalorian, on hold until it is over.
Future Star Wars series for the streaming service is the second and final season of Andor, the third and final season of The Bad Batch, Skeleton Crew, The Acolyte, a second season of Tales of the Jedi and more episodes of Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures arriving on the platform next month.
