Star Wars Memorable Moments – R2-D2 and C-3PO: BFFs

December 10, 2015 by Jessie Robertson

Flickering Myth’s writing team are counting down to the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens by discussing their most memorable Star Wars moments. Next up is Jessie Robertson on R2-D2 and C-3PO…

Like most kids, Star Wars has always been apart of my youth, whether pretending to be fighting the Empire on Endor with my cousins out in Crawford Woods, or looking at books from the library detailing scenes from the movies, I always knew what Star Wars was and enjoyed it. But, my first true experience watching Star Wars and ingesting it was watching it with my dad, sister and youngest brother when we lived in a small apartment together. We’d borrowed the original film, A New Hope, from my aunt and made some popcorn. I was in the kitchen during the first 8-10 minutes, so when I really got to sit down and devote my full attention to it, was the scene where the loveable droids R2-D2 and C-3PO had escaped the Empire’s clutches and landed on the desert planet Tattooine. They were arguing about what to do and where to go next and just the image of seeing these two obviously imaginary robots in this vast, but beautiful landscape just called out to me. I mean, droids aren’t real; yet, through the magic of Star Wars, here they are, walking, talking through the desert. It stuck with me and ever since, the droids have been my favorite characters from Star Wars. I know a lot of people think they are there to sell merchandise, but to me, they are the heart of Star Wars; they’re not fighters, pilots or Jedi; yet they are there for every beat of every battle, putting everything on the line just as our other heroes.

When the new trilogy was announced, I was stoked to find out these loveable droids would be apart of the original tales of the Star Wars history; and I didn’t have to wait long for C3PO and R2D2 to be introduced; it happened in the very first movie, The Phantom Menace. For all it’s hindrances, there are a lot of cool scenes in that movie and for me, this was one of them; it was quick and began the endearing relationship the two would share, with Threepio being the butt and foil of all of Artoo’s pranks and whitcisms.

Now, as I look forward to the new film, The Force Awakens, with tickets firmly in hand for December 17th, beyond the new characters, the new lightsabers and the warm feeling we get seeing the old familiar faces, my old friends R2-D2 and C-3PO are back and I for one, am extremely excited to see the next stage in the adventure and see what these BFF’s get into next.
