Actor and director Stephen Chow has reportedly confirmed to Martial Arts Action Cinema that a sequel to the acclaimed martial arts comedy Kung Fu Hustle is in the works.
Written, produced, directed and starring Chow, Kung Fu Hustle took place in 1940s Shanghai and followed a wannabe gangster who aspires to join the notorious ‘Axe Gang’. The 2014 movie was a critical and commercial success, grossing $102 million worldwide.
There’s been talk of a sequel ever since the release of the original movie, but it seems this new version won’t be a direct follow-up to the film, but rather a spiritual successor set in modern times. Chow plans on directing the movie, as well as potentially making a cameo appearance.
As yet, there’s no word as to when we can expect Kung Fu Hustle 2, with Chow next moving on to another sequel with a follow up to his 2016 hit The Mermaid.
