Yet another Stephen King adaptation is making its way to the big-screen in the shape of 1996 science-fiction horror The Regulators.
According to Deadline Bohemia Group optioned the rights to the bestselling book, and tasked George Cowan with adapting the story, which King himself has approved by saying “I’m delighted that the excitement of The Regulators is coming to the screen. This is going to be good.”
The Regulators takes place in a peaceful town in Wentworth, Ohio that is shattered one day when four vans containing shotgun-wielding “regulators” open fire on the street’s residents, cold-bloodedly killing anyone foolish enough to venture outdoors. Houses begin to mysteriously transform into log cabins and the street now ends in what appears to be a child’s hand-drawn western landscape. Behind this suburban takeover is an evil creature who has possessed the body of an autistic boy whose parents were killed in a drive-by shooting several months earlier.
Written under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, The Regulators was published alongside ‘mirror novel’ Desperation, which represented parallel worlds to one another, and featured a lot of the same characters. There’s sequel potential right there should this turn out to be an IT-sized hit rather than The Langoliers.
