Steve McQueen’s Widows to shoot in September

April 10, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Back in 2014 it was announced that 12 Years a Slave director Steve McQueen would be teaming up with Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn for an adaptation of the 1980s British TV series Widows, and now My Entertainment World is reporting that the crime drama will start shooting in September.

Created by Lynda La Plante (Prime Suspect), Widows aired on ITV in 1983, 1985 and 1995 and follows four women who team up to complete a robbery after their husbands are killed on the job.

“Steve was interested in doing his own version of a gangster film,” said New Regency boss Brad Weston back when the project was first announced. “It felt fresh to him to combine a contemporary, hard-hitting, very grounded gangster movie with four strong female characters. We loved it because that’s who Steve is. He sees things differently. This project gives him the commercial jumping-off point, but then allows him to twist it into a Steve McQueen film.”
