It’s getting on for a decade since the first rumblings of a Streets of Rage movie from SEGA, and now it seems that Hollywood is finally ready to press start on a film version of the classic 90s beat ’em up.
As reported by Deadline, John Wick creator Derek Kolstad has written the script on spec, with Sonic the Hedgehog producer DJ2 Entertainment teaming with Escape Artists to produce the movie adaptation.
Releasing on the SEGA Genesis / Master System in 1991, Streets of Rage follows three police detectives – Adam Hunter, Axel Stone and Blaze Fielding – as they batter their way through a crime syndicate to take down mob boss Mr. X. It was followed by sequels in 1992 and 1994, along with an acclaimed fourth entry in 2020.
