It may have been a bit of a bust with critics, but fans have certainly turned out in force for Suicide Squad, with the film earning $20.5 million from Thursday night previews in North America, almost doubling the previous August record of $11.2 million set by Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy back in 2014.
Suicide Squad looks odds on to surpass Guardians of the Galaxy’s August opening weekend record of , with tracking suggesting that the David Ayer-directed supervillain blockbuster could go as high as $140 million domestically.
The film also opened in a number of international markets on Thursday, amassing $29.6 million. At this rate, a global weekend of around $300 million is certainly within the realm of possibility.
