Deadline is reporting that Euphoria and Anyone But You star Sydney Sweeney is in final talks with Legendary Entertainment about joining the cast of their live-action mecha movie Gundam.
The Gundam movie has been in development at Legendary for several years now, with the studio teaming with Bandai Namco Filmworks, owner of the Japanese franchise which first launched back in 1979 with the anime series Mobile Suit Gundam.
Plot details for the Gundam movie are being kept under wraps, but the franchise takes place in the future, where a population crisis has led humanity to emigrate to space colonies and the Earth Federation is in conflict with the separatist Principality of Zeon, fighting a war via giant robot mechs called mobile suits.
Jim Mickle (Sweet Tooth) is attached to write and direct the Gundam movie, having taken over from Jordan Vogt-Roberts (Kong: Skull Island) who was originally attached to helm the project for Legendary when it was first announced.
Should negotiations prove successful, Gundam will join an increasingly hectic slate for Sweeney. The actress is currently shooting the third season of HBO’s Euphoria and has Ron Howard’s Eden, Michael Pearce’s Echo Valley, Paul Feig’s The Housemaid and David Michod’s as-yet-untitled Christy Martin biopic all in the can. Her upcoming projects meanwhile include the Colman Domingo-directed Scandalous, A24’s The Masque of the Red Death, and the just-announced I Pretended to Be a Missing Girl., while she also remains attached to Sony’s long-planned Barbarella remake.
