Having been pushed back into next year from its original October 2023 date, it may be a while before we get to see anything in the way of official information and marketing on Sony’s upcoming Madame Web movie, but a new report is doing the rounds which claims to have uncovered Sydney Sweeney’s role in the movie.
The film, part of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe alongside the likes of Venom and Morbius, sees Dakota Johnson starring in the title role as Cassandra Webb, and according to insider Jeff Sneider on the Hot Mic podcast, Euphoria and The White Lotus star Sweeney is “100%” playing Spider-Woman.
It’s worth noting here that there are multiple incarnations of Spider-Woman in Marvel Comics, the most famous of whom is Jessica Drew – a character who is making her big screen debut in Sony’s animated sequel Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, where she is voiced by Issa Rae.
Beyond Jessica Drew, it’s previously been suggested that Madame Web could see Sweeney playing the character of Julia Carpenter, the second Spider-Woman, who also went on to serve as the second Arachne and also second Madame Web after Cassandra Webb. With that in mind, the Julia Carpenter incarnation of Spider-Woman would appear to be the most likely candidate.
Back in 2020, Sony tapped Don’t Worry Darling director Olivia Wilde to helm one of its Marvel projects, widely believed to be a Spider-Woman movie, and Sneider went on to state that he believes the project remains in development and could also feature Sweeney’s version of the character.
Sydney Sweeney is fast beoming one of the busiest stars in Hollywood following her breakthrough roles in HBO’s Euphoria and The White Lotus. Along with Madame Web, she’s set to take the lead in a remake of Barbarella, while her other upcoming feature projects include The Caretaker, Immaculate, and an R-rated rom-com alongside Top Gun: Maverick’s Glen Powell.
