Despite the fact that he announced his retirement as Rocky Balboa following the release of last year’s Creed II, it looks like Sylvester Stallone is keen on another outing as the Italian Stallion.
Speaking to Variety, Stallone has revealed that he is currently working on another Rocky movie – that’s Rocky VII, as opposed to Creed III – and that talks are also underway about a Rocky prequel series, which would be targeted at a streaming outlet.
According to the site, the new Rocky is being developed by Stallone for producer Irwin Winkler and MGM, co-owners of the franchise, with Winkler revealing that negotiations are now underway with Stallone to star, and that “We’re very high on it. We’re very anxious to make it.”
“Rocky meets a young, angry person who got stuck in this country when he comes to see his sister,” states Stallone as to the plot of the potential sequel. “He takes him into his life, and unbelievable adventures begin, and they wind up south of the border. It’s very, very timely.”
Stallone first portrayed Rocky back in 1975’s Best Picture winning film (for which he was also nominated for the Oscar for Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay) and the franchise enjoyed successful sequels in 1979, 1982 and 1985 before 1990’s disappointing Rocky V put the series on hold. Stallone returned however in 2006 for the critically acclaimed Rocky Balboa and has since reprised his role in the spinoffs Creed (receiving a Best Supporting Actor nomination) and Creed II.
