Back in August of last year it was announced that a spinoff sequel to the vampire mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows is in the works, which will focus on the werewolf characters from the New Zealand comedy.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly to promote his new film Hunt for the Wilderpeople [read our review here], director Taika Waititi has given an update on development on the sequel, which has the rather excellent title of We’re Wolves.
“We want to do it, and we’re coming up with story ideas,” states Waititi. “The first film took us about seven years to make, and we don’t want to do that again. It’s a lot easier now that we have all the characters, and we know how we want to do it, and we know that we can do it. The first time we were doing it, we had no idea what we were trying to do, really. It’s not like we were inventing the mockumentary genre, but doing it with special effects, and trying to figure that all out, and make it funny, was a really, really long process. The same werewolf actors would come back [for We’re Wolves]. It would basically be Rhys and Stu vying for position as the alpha male in the werewolf gang.”
Before he returns to the supernatural inhabitants of Wellington, Waititi is spending some time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with the director set to begin production on next year’s Thor: Ragnarok this July.
