Having scored a huge hit with the new Marvel blockbuster Thor: Ragnarok, New Zealand filmmaker Taika Waititi is going to have his pick of the projects moving forward, and he’s certainly wasting little time in adding to his slate.
In addition to the What We Do In the Shadows sequel We’re Wolves, Waititi is also attached to an animated film about Michael Jackson’s pet chimp Bubbles, and has recently expressed his interest in returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe both for another Thor movie and a Black Widow comedy. However, it seems he’s got something else up his sleeve and is also looking to shoot a comedy about Nazis.
“I just want to keep it interesting—to keep shocking and challenging myself,” Waititi told Vice when asked what is next for him. “One of my next films is a stop-motion film about the life and times of Michael Jackson’s chimpanzee Bubbles. There’s also a smaller film that I’ve written that I’m going to try to shoot next year. It’s a Nazi comedy. I wrote it five years ago, and now it’s weirdly perfect timing. Nazis are cool again [Laughs].”
National Socialism probably isn’t the first thing that springs to mind when thinking of subject matter for a comedy, but in Waititi’s hands, it’s definitely going to be one to watch out for…
