With his stop-motion Bubbles the chimpanzee project scrapped for obvious reasons, Taiki Waititi is looking to scratch the animation itch with Fox/Disney’s proposed Flash Gordon reboot.
According to Deadline, the Thor: Raganrok director will tackle the multicoloured space opera of Flash Gordon. The report suggests that he’s signing on to write and direct, but as he’s busy in post on World War II satire, Jojo Rabbit, his role might change.
With Matthew Vaughn (Kingsman) and Julius Avery (Overlord) previously linked to a Flash Gordon revival, the project could be perfectly suited to Waititi’s off-kilter sensibilities. He can embrace the overt silliness of the comic-strip, which was last transferred to the big-screen in 1980’s Queen orchestrated flop.
