It was reported yesterday that Taika Waititi had a mysterious project in the works at Fox Searchlight and that the plot details were currently unknown. All we knew was Imaginarium was involved and that shooting was planned for later this year ahead of his MCU return for Thor: Love and Thunder.
Now, according to Deadline, Waititi’s next Fox Searchlight project will be Next Goal Wins, a film based on the 2014 British football documentary of the same name from directors Mike Brett and Steve Jamison.
The documentary follows Dutch coach Thomas Rongen who attempts the nearly impossible task of turning the American Samoa soccer team from losers into winners. The documentary made its debut at the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival and later won Best Documentary at the British Independent Film Awards the same year. Fox Searchlight is also debuting Waititi’s next project, Jojo Rabbit, at the Toronto International Film Festival next month with the film officially releasing on 18th October in the United States and 3rd January 2020 in the UK.
Waititi has already completed the script and is set to commence filming on Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder in 2020 – after he has wrapped up production on Next Goal Wins.
