Taron Egerton teases new Kingsman 2 villain, says film will have an “international story”

January 28, 2016 by Justin Cook

Kingsman 2, the sequel to Matthew Vaughn’s 2015 sleeper hit Kingsman: The Secret Service, is set to begin filming later this year, and while the film will most likely include another eccentric villain and more brutal but comical action, the people behind the production presumably want to surprise viewers the same way they did with the first film, which means information on the project has been few and far between.

However, Taron Egerton, who played the main character Eggsy in The Secret Service and will be returning for the sequel, seems very exciting about the upcoming film and dropped an update while promoting his new movie, Eddie the Eagle, at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival.

During an interview with Collider he said, “With Kingsman, we’re shooting in the summer at present. There’s a script, it’s brilliant. Obviously there’s only so much I can say but what I can say is that we shot [the first] one all in the U.K., that won’t be the case with the next one. It’s a far more international story, we’re going to some incredible places, and we have a villain to rival Samuel L. Jackson—this new one is so brilliantly written I wish I could play it. It’s amazing.”

Samuel L. Jackson played one of the most memorable villains of 2o15 in The Secret Service, but it sounds like the next antagonist will be just as wild and ridiculous; additionally, a more “international story” could end up being a lot of fun.

Kingsman: The Secret Service made close to $415 million at the worldwide box office last year, on a $81 million budget.

Alongside Egerton, Mark Strong (The Imitation Game) has expressed a desire to return to his role as Merlin and Vaughn has also said that Colin Firth (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) might make an appearance as Galahad. Kingsman 2 will be released on June 16, 2017.
