It was no surprise to see Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour stay atop the box-office this weekend, with the concert movie dancing off with a further $31 million in ticket receipts for its 3-day return to cinemas.
The real story would be how Martin Scorsese’s three-hour Osage-epic Killers of the Flower Moon would fare in the face of Swift’s sophomore frame, with the answer being a decent $23 million debut for the Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone and Robert De Niro starring crime-saga.
Scorsese stood no chance in the face of The Eras Tour though, with the AMC backed release lifting its North American tally to an estimated $129.8 million through Sunday, and in doing so became the first concert movie to pass the $100 million milestone.
Budgeted at somewhere between $200 million to $250 million, Killers of the Flower Moon opened at the lower end of projections, but with stellar reviews, including our own ★★★★ appraisal, and plenty of Academy Award buzz, Apple Studios and Paramount will be hoping it has legs to carry it through to awards season.
Elsewhere in the charts The Exorcist: Believer managed to summon a further $6.7 million for a third placed finish and $54 million domestic total, while Disney’s annual rerelease of The Nightmare Before Christmas did solid business with a $4.1 million weekend.
