Tenet star is surprised at how little the film uses CGI

July 23, 2020 by Liam Waddington

While audiences are aware that director Christopher Nolan tries to create his movies using as many practical effects as possible with a little amount of CGI, it seems like one Tenet actor is shocked at how much of the film is achieved practically.

In an interview with GQ, Himesh Patel, who had his breakout moment in Danny Boyle’s Yesterday, revealed he was mind blown by how much of Tenet was crafted in-camera including buying an actual plane to blow up.

“To work with someone like Chris and the brilliant actors in the film, to be involved in some big scale stuff, was thrilling. The scale of it is just incomprehensible and then when you find out that it’s all been done in camera – there’s maybe a tiny bit of CGI in his movies – it’s mind blowing. Even the stuff that you think is impossible to encounter, like a lot of the stuff in Interstellar was all done in camera. I don’t understand how they even do that, but he finds a way. And that means that the whole crew is part of these huge stunts that he pulls off – like the thing you would have seen in the trailer with the plane. That was an actual plane that production had to buy to blow up!”

Unfortunately, it may be some time before audiences can witness the practical effects teased by Patel in Tenet as Warner Bros. have recently revealed that Christopher Nolan’s latest feature film has been delayed indefinitely.

Armed with only one word – Tenet – and fighting for the survival of the entire world, the Protagonist journeys through a twilight world of international espionage on a mission that will unfold in something beyond real-time. Not time travel. Inversion.

Tenet sees Christopher Nolan directing a cast that includes John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Dimple Kapadia, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Clémence Poésy, Michael Caine, and Kenneth Branagh.
