Tenet stars Robert Pattinson and John David Washington open up about the film

May 30, 2020 by EJ Moreno

In an interview with Total Film, the lead actors in the upcoming blockbuster Tenet were very candid about their feelings about the hotly-anticipated movie. From the film’s impossibility to genre-bending ways, John David Washington and Robert Pattinson still seem in awe of Tenet long after they’ve wrapped production.

When describing the movie, Pattinson compared the complicated film to a plate-spinner: “There’s a point where you’re like, it’s kind of cool, and it becomes so insane that it’s almost frightening.”

He goes on to add, “I sound like such a moron talking about this stuff. Because on top of the, uh – how would I even say this? Quite advanced theoretical physics; I think I’m allowed to say that – it’s just got a billion different ways to read it. It’s so complicated; if it wasn’t Chris Nolan doing it, you’d be like, ‘This is an impossible movie.'”

John David Washington, who is playing the lead character named simply Protagonist, goes on to talk about the film and what it feels like in regards to genre. “It’s obviously genre-bending. It’s its own genre: it’s the Nolan genre.”

Over the years, director Christopher Nolan has grown into his own with a style that’s fairly recognizable. If it’s a big-budget Batman trilogy or sci-fi space romps, the films all include the scale, weight, and complexity you come to expect from Nolan.

With a head-scratching second trailer and comments like these from the lead actors, it seems like Tenet will fit nicely next to the other high concept fan-favorite Nolan movies.

Armed with only one word – Tenet – and fighting for the survival of the entire world, the Protagonist journeys through a twilight world of international espionage on a mission that will unfold in something beyond real-time. Not time travel. Inversion.

Tenet sees Christopher Nolan directing a cast that includes John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Dimple Kapadia, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Clémence Poésy, Michael Caine, and Kenneth Branagh.
