Terminator Genisys cracks worldwide box office top 10 for 2015

September 21, 2015 by Scott J. Davis

Having being critically-mauled on its release back in early July, it looked like the final nail had been firmly planted into the coffin of the Terminator franchise with Terminator Genisys, despite the return of Arnold Schwarzenegger as the titular cyborg from the future. But it seems the coffin may not be laid to rest just yet.

After Terminator Genisys’ paltry take of around $89million in the US, many thought the touted three-picture mini-trilogy for the franchise may have been lost in a time-loop, but its international takings have been somewhat surprising. Its release in China, for example, has been booming, bringing in $27.4 million in its opening day  and helping to push its international total to $350 million for a grand total of $440.2 million worldwide.

Even more surprising is that the film now sits at number ten in the 2015 worldwide charts, ahead of such hits as Mad Max: Fury Road ($374.7 million), Ant-Man ($401.4 million) and Kingsman: The Secret Service ($410.1 million) and far outstretching the likes of Ted 2 ($207.9 million), Tomorrowland ($208.6 million) and the equally-maligned Fantastic Four ($164 million).

The future is not set just yet: a sequel (or two) may be just around the corner.

Terminator Genisys, directed by Alan Taylor (Game of Thrones), sees Arnold Schwarzenegger leading a cast that also includes Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones), Jason Clarke (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes), Jai Courtney (Suicide Squad), Byung-hun Lee (G.I. Joe: Retaliation), Matt Smith (Doctor Who) and J.K. Simmons (Whiplash).
