With The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises both crossing $1 billion at the global box office, there’s little doubt that 2012 was the year of the superhero movie. However, when it comes to comic books there was only one winner, with Image’s The Walking Dead #100 taking the title of the best selling comic of the year, as well as claiming seven places in the top 10 graphic novels of 2012.
Beyond The Walking Dead, the comic book chart was dominated by Marvel, with The Avengers taking eight of the remaining nine spots (mainly with the Avengers vs. X-Men crossovers), although unsurprisingly the controversial Amazing Spider-Man #700 also featured.
Meanwhile, although DC was completely shut out of the comic book chart, The Dark Knight does appear twice in the best-selling graphic novels with Batman: Earth One and Batman: The Court of Owls, while Alan Moore and Kevin O’Neill’s League of Extraordinary Gentleman, Volume III: Century #3 – 2009 took tenth spot.
