Okay this is a little out there but bear with us here. According to Deadline, The CW has purchased the rights to a new script from debut writer Alexis Jolly and NCIS star Michael Weatherly based on the classic novel Little Women, which it is planning on developing into a TV series.
But rather than develop a loyal adaptation of the original book, The CW is apparently looking to create a “hyper stylised, gritty adaptation” which will be set in dystopia Philadelphia instead of rural Massachusetts.
The original novel written by US author Louisa May Alcott and published in 1868 tells the story of four half-sisters struggling with adolescence and love during the Civil War. A mini-series version was adapted in 1978 and an animated television series was produced during the late 80’s. There have been various movie adaptations of Little Women over the years, the first coming in 1918 an the most recent being released in 1994 starring Wynona Ryder, Susan Sarandon, Claire Danes, Kirsten Dunst, Samantha Mathis and Christian Bale. It was nominated for 3 Academy Awards in 1995.
It’s still early days on this deal so casting isn’t underway yet and no word on when production might begin.
