The CW’s live-action Powerpuff Girls series casts Chloe Bennet, Dove Cameron and Yana Perrault as the genetically-engineered superheroes

March 10, 2021 by Liam Waddington

Last year, it was reported that The CW was developing a live-action Powerpuff Girls series, and now, the show has announced its main leads who will be portraying the genetically-engineered superheroes.

According to Variety, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. star Chloe Bennet will play Blossom who has repressed kiddie-superhero trauma that has left her feeling anxious and reclusive, while Dove Cameron (Descendants 3, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) and Yana Perrault (Alanis Morissette’s musical Jagged Little Pill) will play Bubbles and Buttercup respectively.

Bubbles is described as the same sparkling character as she was as a kid, and is initially more interested in recapturing her fame by becoming a superhero again. Meanwhile, Buttercup left her rebellious exterior behind and has spent her adulthood shedding her superhero identity to live an anonymous life.

Based on Craig McCracken’s Cartoon Network series, new live-action Powerpuff Girls series will see “the pint-sized superheroes as disillusioned twentysomethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime-fighting. Will they agree to reunite now that the world needs them more than ever?”

The series will be written by Heather Regnier and Diablo Cody, who also serve as executive producers. The long-time producer of CW show’s Greg Berlanti will team with Sarah Schechter and David Madden to executive produce via Berlanti Productions. Warner Bros. Television will also produce.
The Powerpuff Girls was initially an animated series on Cartoon Network that ran for six seasons and 78 episodes between 1998 and 2005. The Powerpuff Girls Movie was released in 2002, and Cartoon Network ran a rebooted series with new animation in 2016.
The CW’s live-action Powerpuff Girls series currently does not have a release date.
