The Fate of the Furious may have a 160-minute runtime

February 20, 2017 by Justin Cook

Between the countless absurd action sequences, fist-pumping one-liners and monologues about family, you’d think each Fast & Furious film had a lengthy runtime, but such is not the case — at least not yet. According to European movie site Cinemarx, the upcoming eighth entry in the beloved franchise, The Fate of the Furious, will be the longest film yet.

While, of course, the runtime won’t be official until Universal Pictures confirms it themselves, reportedly The Fate of the Furious will clock in at a giant 160 minutes (two hours 40 minutes).

Over time, the Fast & Furious movies have generally been getting longer, while still remaining at a reasonable length, with the first four films in the series all running in the 100-minute range and the three more recent movies in the 130-minute range. In fact, Furious 7 was the previous title holder of longest in the series, coming in at 137 minutes. Despite this trend, however, never has a Fast & Furious film felt overlong. Overstuffed, maybe, but there are worse things for a high-adrenaline action movie to be.

The Fast & Furious films are so full of energy and momentum that one can’t help but wonder if at 160 minutes Fate will be able to keep audience members engaged. Admittedly, a Fast & Furious movie that’s longer than The Dark Knight, Inception and most Harry Potter films sounds strangely appealing, but we’ll have to wait and see.

Now that Dom and Letty are on their honeymoon and Brian and Mia have retired from the game—and the rest of the crew has been exonerated—the globetrotting team has found a semblance of a normal life. But when a mysterious woman (Oscar winner Charlize Theron) seduces Dom into the world of crime he can’t seem to escape and a betrayal of those closest to him, they will face trials that will test them as never before.

From the shores of Cuba and the streets of New York City to the icy plains off the arctic Barents Sea, our elite force will crisscross the globe to stop an anarchist from unleashing chaos on the world’s stage…and to bring home the man who made them a family.

The Fate of the Furious is directed by F. Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton) and features a cast that includes Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Eva Mendes, Elsa Pataky, Lucas Black, Nathalie Emmanuel, Kurt Russell, Kristofer Hivju, Scott Eastwood, Helen Mirren and Charlize Theron. It is set for release on April 14th 2017, followed by Fast & Furious 9 on April 19th 2019 and Fast & Furious 10 on April 2nd 2021.
