The Fate of the Furious tracking $400 million plus worldwide opening weekend

April 11, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Despite reaching its eighth instalment, the Fast & Furious franchise shows no signs of slowing down, with box office tracking for The Fate of the Furious predicting a whopping global opening weekend of between $375 million and $440 million.

Should it break the $400 million mark, it would surpass the franchise’s current record set by Fast & Furious 7, which grossed $397.7 million back in 2015. That would also place it as Universal’s second biggest debut of all time behind another 2015 release, Jurassic World, which opened to a $525 million global haul.

Even if The Fate of the Furious ends up on the low end of tracking, it will see the series reaching a new box office milestone as it passed $4 billion in worldwide grosses, with the previous seven films having amassed just over $3.9 billion in total.

Now that Dom and Letty are on their honeymoon and Brian and Mia have retired from the game—and the rest of the crew has been exonerated—the globetrotting team has found a semblance of a normal life. But when a mysterious woman (Oscar winner Charlize Theron) seduces Dom into the world of crime he can’t seem to escape and a betrayal of those closest to him, they will face trials that will test them as never before.

From the shores of Cuba and the streets of New York City to the icy plains off the arctic Barents Sea, our elite force will crisscross the globe to stop an anarchist from unleashing chaos on the world’s stage…and to bring home the man who made them a family.

The Fate of the Furious is directed by F. Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton) and features a cast that includes Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Eva Mendes, Elsa Pataky, Lucas Black, Nathalie Emmanuel, Kurt Russell, Kristofer Hivju, Scott Eastwood, Helen Mirren and Charlize Theron. It is set for release on April 14th.
