Leicester City shook English football to its core this year, as Claudio Ranieri’s team pulled off one of the biggest shocks in sporting history, winning the Premier League title despite odds of 5000-1 at the start of the season.
Well, as we all know, Hollywood loves a good underdog story, and so it may not be too much of a surprise to hear that Paul Tamasy and Eric Johnson (The Fighter, Patriots Day) have signed on to pen a script for movie, which they’ll be co-writing with Adrian Butchart (Goal: The Dream Begins). Simon Egan and Gareth Ellis-Unwin (The King’s Speech) are producing.
Deadline reports that the film will focus on star striker Jamie Vardy, who enjoyed a meteoric rise from factory worker and non-league footballer to Premier League title winner, banging in 24 goals and setting a Premiership record of scoring in 11 consecutive matches along the way.
“Gareth and I are thrilled to be able to welcome Paul and Eric to the team,” Egan said. “They were nominated by the Academy for The Fighter in same year that The King’s Speech was in contention and we saw and heard firsthand how highly respected and talented they both are. We very much wanted to find a way we might work together. Brilliant writers who bring another layer of top-tier talent to this project.”
“Eric and I had just signed with Josh Varney at 42 for representation in the UK when Josh asked me if there was a story out there I really wanted to tell,” added Tamasy. “Without hesitation I said, ‘Jamie Vardy’s and Leicester’s unlikely climb to the top of the Premier League.’ The story represents everything we love in a movie.”
