Jessie Robertson reviews the nineteenth episode of The Flash season 4…
In a bubble, “Fury Rogue” (ridiculous play on words from Mad Max) probably isn’t that bad. But, when you’re doing these reviews and trying to fit together the pieces of a season long puzzle, to fill an episode with the transportation of a villain we didn’t care about in the first place (Fallout), throw in a over-used villain (Black Siren X) and The Flash becomes the most monotonous of all the CW shows.
Make no mistake: I’ll take all the Wentworth Miller I can get; especially playing Citizen Cold, he’s just a bit sunnier and a whole lot more flirtatious (looking at you Cisco). But, I have to say; he felt completely out of place as well. I’ll take any episodes he shows up in but he felt completely superfluous here. Coincidentally, he’s proposing to Ray on Earth X and uses the tragedy of his Earth to dole out advice to Barry. Barry and Iris also visit the world’s worst therapist again (please no more) all over Ralph’s death. While tragic, just because the words are on the page of the script, we don’t have to believe them. Go back earlier in the season; Ralph lamented whatever her name was that he apparently loved after 30 seconds, now Ralph’s been around nearly all season but I don’t think one person on the team truly had deep feelings for him where this loss crushes their soul. I mean, Barry lost both his parents. The losses are starting to pile up and after a slip by Thinker, we droll on for an hour to pound home the message that since he’s lost all emotion, that’s how we beat him.
This week just had a lot of characters that were not serviced well; Harry losing his intellect… this just doesn’t give me a good feeling. If this happens, his intellect was his defining trait it may be time for a new Wells. Cisco is all about making him a new toy after his dark matter is gone from the Thinking Cap but just merely 2 weeks ago he wanted nothing to do with it. Caitlin finally gets a few scenes where she’s all boo-hoo about no more Killer Frost, but I’m quite sure she’ll find a way (she is a brilliant scientist after all.) Joe merely gets taken out quickly by the baddie and why is Laurel on this show? Her villain was just a bad copy of Black Siren from Arrow, and to do a bad copy of that character, isn’t anywhere near a good thing. The Flash just feels stale and I think the 12 bus meta program is way too long a course. I’m still all for dropping these shows down to 14 episodes.
