The Flickering Myth team react…
The latest trailer for Logan dropped yesterday [watch it here], which gave us more of Hugh Jackman in his final outing as Wolverine, as well as some badass moments featuring X-23. The Internet was buzzing with praise for the trailer, but what did the Flickering Myth writing staff think?
Chris Cooper: Seems it’s deserving of the 18 certificate. Sad that it looks like we’ll never see him suited up fully but there’s a lot to like here.
Ricky Church: More than the first trailer (which I did enjoy a lot), this one gives the impression that Logan will blend the serious character tone and comic book action elements together very well. I like seeing a bit more of Logan’s interactions with Xavier and X-23 and despite this not being a red band trailer, I was surprised how much blood they were able to get in this. I also like how we finally get to see X-23 in action, though I also wish we maybe got a clearer idea of who the villains are aside from a bunch of white dudes with guns. The only moment I kind of scratched my head at is the literal comic book moment where the adventures of the X-Men are recounted in comic books. Seems a little unnecessary to break the fourth wall so blatantly, but maybe context will help? Either way, I was impressed and this could be Jackman’s best performance as Wolverine.
Sean Wilson: This really took me by surprise. The dusty, bleached atmosphere of the initial trailer had me intrigued but I was worried the movie might be a tad one-note. This adds welcome notes of dry humour to the setting and glimpses of awesome action that set up X-23 as an awesome heir to Logan’s mantle. I’m now much more optimistic about this – and the violence looks enjoyably gnarly.
Ben Robins: Liking that there’s some humour in there too, and really looking forward to some proper R-rated Wolverine. Little confused where things are going timeline wise, but seeing Professor X say ‘fuck’ definitely made me forget about all the tiny nitpicks.
Villordsutch: Logan still looks like it is going to be an outstanding X-Men film. Both trailers have been edited so fantastically well that I – in all seriousness – want to go and watch a Wolverine film at the cinema. A sentence I never thought I’d utter.
Luke Owen: This looks to be, hands down, the best X-Men movie ever made. Like, this should be seriously brilliant.
Tai Freligh: I was impressed with the first trailer and what they were going for and was already sold. This new trailer has me even more excited if possible. Seeing the humour in this one was great. Also the road trip/buddy film aspect of Charles and Logan together, both dealing with how to protect and raise this child who has powers like Logan, but doesn’t fully understand how to control them yet is an interesting aspect. I didn’t realize she had claws like him and I wonder how she was made and why those people want her. It raised a lot of questions for me that make me want to see the movie even more now. Bravo!
James Garcia: This will easily be the best X-Men film yet, and could very well be one of the best superhero films ever made. Everything about this film looks incredible – tone, action, performances, dry humor, all of it. I hope it makes a billion dollars so more studios will take chances like this.
Helen Murdoch: This trailer is simply superb. Have really high expectations for this. It’s bloody, gritty, packed full of action and heart. Roll on March.
Tom Jolliffe: Looks great. That being said, I much preferred the first trailer – but maybe that’s because of Johnny Cash. Again though, this to me does not look like it’s come off a Marvel production line. It looks it’s own beast. A Wolverine film that looks like it could have come from Clint Eastwood in his prime. I’ll take that.
Luke Owen: What makes Logan look so special is because there isn’t a comic book movie out there like it. Do I want it to be successful? Of course. But what I don’t want is for studios to take that success to mean, ‘let’s make more films just like it’. That’s what they do. They look to what works and try and replicate it. Logan looks great because it doesn’t look like The Avengers, which doesn’t look like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Comic book movies are more interesting when they all have their own flavours.
In the near future, a weary Logan cares for an ailing Professor X in a hide out on the Mexican border. But Logan’s attempts to hide from the world and his legacy are up-ended when a young mutant arrives, being pursued by dark forces.
Logan is being helmed by The Wolverine director James Mangold and will see Hugh Jackman joined in the cast by Patrick Stewart as Professor X, along with new additions Boyd Holbrook, Richard E. Grant, Stephen Merchant, Dafne Keen, Eriq La Salle, Elizabeth Rodriguez and Elise Neal. It is set for release on March 1st in the UK and on March 3rd in the States.
