Our writing team share their thoughts on the Thor: Ragnarok Comic-Con trailer…
While Marvel Studios chose (pretty unsuccessfully) to keep its Avengers: Infinity War trailer for Hall H eyes only at Comic-Con this past Saturday, the studio did unleash the second trailer for November’s Thor: Ragnarok, giving us our latest look at the Taika Waititi-directed cosmic adventure. Find out what our writing team made of the trailer here…
Villordsutch: Well I need to see this film. Now! All hail Taika Waititi!
Tom Beasley: After the infuriatingly safe mediocrity of Spider-Man: Homecoming, Marvel seems to be going fully bonkers – and that’s a great thing. Taika Waititi has created a wonderfully colourful world, which seems to be the perfect fit for bizarre buddy chemistry between Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo. On top of that, Cate Blanchett oozes menace as the villain and it looks like we’re in for some killer action. Is it October yet?
Tom Jolliffe: This looks like fun. I’m far from the biggest Marvel fan, but this looks like unabashed fun, sort of oddly evoking terrible 80’s fantasy films I thought were immense as a kid. And I mean that in the best way possible.
Samuel Brace: Pleasantly surprised. Genuinely interested in seeing this, which is a stark contrast from previous Thor entries. The 80s vibe looks to suit it well. Hopefully the trailer’s music is representative of the movie’s score!
Eric Bay-Andersen: This has already been a great year for Marvel – they’re putting the emphasis on fun, and this looks set to turn that up to 11! Really looking forward to the buddy-movie element of Banner and Thor together, and as long as there’s still a solid story amongst the colourful wackiness this could be something truly special!
Sean Wilson: Visually zippy and the actors look like they’re having a lot of fun. The tone of the humour looks decidedly more flippant which presumably is a reaction to the more stately grandeur of the previous two movies. However in Taika Waititi I trust. The man knows how to deliver humour and heart.
Jordan Jones: This was so enjoyable. Any problems with cohesiveness that I had with the Justice League trailer are the opposite here. It’s immediately apparent that Thor: Ragnarok has it’s own look, sound, and sense of humor. Everything about this movie looks great so far. Cate Blanchett may very well break the Bland-Marvel-Villain curse. Can’t wait for this.
Shaun Munro: This reaffirms my feeling that Taika Waititi is going to deliver one of the more unique and entertaining MCU films yet. It looks terrific and the cast is clearly having a blast. Hopefully it gets really, really weird and isn’t quite as safe as most of the recent Marvel movies.
Chris Cooper: Great fun. I think that pretty much covers it!
Anghus Houvouras: Holy hell was this an amazing trailer. Sure, it does a lot of thing I hate including drastically changing a character to fit a particular story type i.e. A Thor who talks like a character in a Judd Apatow comedy which completely invalidates any concept of high stakes. However, it also does something I love, which is giving creators license to have fun with these characters and create something that doesn’t feel like a formulaic, cookie-cutter, poorly visualized phone-in. (cough) Spider-Man: Homecoming (cough). Count me in.
Helen Murdoch: Looks like great fun and this is the first time I’ve been excited for a Thor film. Love the 80s vibe, the more Ruffo the better!
Mike McClelland: Wow. Does this look like fun or what? I was particularly excited about the striking visuals. After the first trailer, I thought that this would more or less adhere to the Guardians of the Galaxy palette, but I loved the mix of bright, zany neon mixed in with the over-the-top, Baroque-ish angelic cavalry shots. And I was really excited to see Valkyrie and Hela get nearly as much screentime as the boys.

As with the first trailer, an overwhelmingly positive response from our writers, and a lot of excitement for the God of Thunder’s third solo outing. What did you make of the trailer? Let us know in the comments!
In Marvel Studios’ “Thor: Ragnarok,” Thor is imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer and finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok—the destruction of his homeworld and the end of Asgardian civilization—at the hands of an all-powerful threat, the ruthless Hela. But first he must survive a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against his former ally and fellow Avenger—the Incredible Hulk.
Thor: Ragnarok is being directed by Taika Waititi (What We Do in the Shadows) and features Marvel veterans Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Anthony Hopkins as Odin, Idris Elba as Heimdall and Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk alongside Cate Blanchett as Hela, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Jeff Goldblum as the Grandmaster, Karl Urban as Skurge, Taika Waititi as Korg, Clancy Brown as Surtur and Sam Neill and Rachel House in as-yet-unrevealed roles. It is set for release on October 27th in the UK and November 3rd in the States.
